Used Oil Equals Free Heat
If you have a massive supply of waste oil than I would highly recommend that you consider purchasing a waste oil burner. It can save you a lot of money in the long run.
This is definitely a long term investment. A quality oil burner will cost you several thousand dollars and that’s without the cost of installation.
Depending on your current set up the installation can be in the $1500-$2000 ballpark. But when you think about what you stand to gain over the course of five years the payback is immense. I came across this alternative energy technology by total chance.
I have a mobile oil change that has been thriving for the last several years and I generate a lot of used waste oil. I can easily get up to several hundred gallons of used motor oil every week in the summer months. I was having Emerald Alaska, an oil recycling company, to come pick up the oil but storage was quickly becoming a problem due to the more business we were getting.
One day the light bulb went off in my head. “What if I could turn all my used oil into an asset?” I then remembered a company called Ditch Witch, a company that sells and leases out construction equipment, who we used to bring some of our excess used motor to. They had some type of heater that ran off waste oil. I did some more research and found that there were a few other companies in town used waste oil burners.
I called one of the companies up and they sent one of their distributors to my house. I was building a massive 1500 square foot garage on to my house and knew that my heating bill would be raised by at least $200 per month if I continued using natural gas. It was an easy sell for me. Three years later I am really pleased I made the investment I did. The total cost of my waste oil burner plus installation was at least $11,000.
I would not take it back for the world.
I love being free and self sufficient from the natural gas companies who are always raising their rates whenever they feel like it. I feel like this is my way of “fighting back” while saving myself money at the same time. I have upgraded my system a lot since I bought it. I have added two items to my waste oil burner since I acquired it back in 2007. The first item was a fuel economizer to make my whole system more efficient.
Since I purchased that I burn 10-10% less oil. The other item I purchased just recently was a waste oil centrifuge. I want to make absolutely certain that the cleanest oil possible is going into my machine and a centrifuge thoroughly cleans all the garage and moisture from any used motor oil I get.
