Gas prices are going up and so are heating costs. We are almost done with winter but trust me, it will be back sooner than you think.

If you have been a longtime reader of my site than you know that there are few items I endorse more than waste oil burners.  I have not seen very many investments that give the type of rate of return that these do.

Quite frankly, a heating system outfitted with this type of oil burner will eliminate your heating costs.  Not reduce them.  Not just make your monthly heating costs a little bit lighter on your pockets.

I really do mean that changing over your heating set-up from a conventional boiler or furnace into a waste oil boiler or waste oil furnace will save you TONS of money in the long run.

As many of you know I have seen first hand what these alternative energy heating systems can do.  My January heating bill was $10.00 and I live in one of the coldest states in the union.

It was not by accident or chance that my bill was that price.  It was because I generate heat for my home and business from used motor oil.

My supply is not natural gas, electricity, or more commonly heating oil.  All those items seem to be going up daily.  Instead, I generate all my heat from a constant source that is free and environmentally friendly.

Boy, do I feel sorry for residents in Fairbanks.  Most of the residents up there are paying $500-$600 a month for heating oil to heat their homes.

For all the owners of conventional oil burners, fear not.  I have have written several articles for you including how to troubleshoot everything known to man.  I even made a post about how these burners work to heat your homes.

But for residential owners who have extra cash and want to save a little bit of money in the future please read this.

Like I have said before it was the best item I ever spent my money on.

Best Heating System You can Get

Do you think I regret my decision in purchasing a waste oil burner at all when my natural gas bills come in?

Its the best heating system I could have every gotten.

As you can see from the picture below my total heating expense for this month was $9.00.  I live in the coldest state of the the country and my gas bill is only nine dollars!  Sometimes I cannot believe this whole idea of mine actually worked.

How do you think I am able to do this?  The answer is I bought a waste oil boiler back in 2007.

I have a company that generates tons of used waste oil and it was becoming a pain to get rid of it.  I was having a company come by and pick it up every other week and it was becoming a huge pain.  At times they wanted to charge me for it as well even though they planned to re-sell it to companies who make asphalt.

October Natural Gas Bill

October Natural Gas Bil

So as you may already know every furnace or boiler has an oil burner in them.  Some of them run off natural gas, some run on electricity, but most of them throughout this country (especially on the east coast) run off heating oil.   I  had found out, from doing a lot of research, that you can purchase oil burners especially designed to run off used motor oil.

I was skeptical as usual (its very hard to convince me of anything) but the idea of being able to completely heat your home, office, or any building you own off a product that’s considered waste by most people was just too tempting to pass up.

I live in Alaska and as you may or may not know winter in this area lasts for six to seven months.  And as you might have guessed it gets extremely cold (duh!). So you can also imagine how much a person stands to save if he could totally erase a heating bill from his monthly expenses.

I have already saved thousands by purchasing my Energy Logic waste oil boiler.  Every ounce of heat I use now is absolutely free.  As of now I can run my home and garage at 80 degrees or 60 degrees and it does not matter.

As I have stated before every winter the gas company have become suspicious of me tampering with the meter.  I have told the meter guys over and over again that I am not running my home off natural gas.

They do not seem to believe me.  Most people have no idea that this type of alternative energy technology even exists.  Those guys have every home in their grid on their computer system and cannot accept the fact that I only owe them $9.00 a month when its -20 Fahrenheit outside.  I think its hilarious.  If I were in their shoes I would think the exact same thing.

So I know for a fact that once the weather dips down to bellow zero (its actually been fairy warm for November) I’ll be seeing some of the meter guys come wanting to talk to me and ask me all sorts of questions because they think I am lying to them.

Investing in my waste oil burner for my boiler has helped me become more self sufficient and has allowed me to reduce my heating bill to absolutely nothing (well, $9.00 for the hook-up fee).

I have not had any problems with my set-up at all.  I have taken the time and funds to maintain my expensive machine and it has never given any problems whatsoever.  You have to filter the oil, make certain no condensation gets into your burner, and do annual tune ups every years.  If you do this I can almost guarantee that you will have the same results.

Oil Burner Basic Troubleshooting

These are two problems that most people who have oil burners come across.

Keep in mind that these are basic diagnostic troubleshooting steps for a person somewhat familiar to what they are doing.

If you have no clue how these machines work I would strongly recommend you call a professional to make a service call.

The oil burner will not turn on?

This is a common problem.  If your furnace or oil burner will not turn on you need to start with pressing the reset button.  This is going to manually start the burner.  Its usually in plain sight and not hard to find at all.  Although they may not say the words “RESET” on them its most likely going to be red.  Push the button.  If that does not work push it again.  If it does not come on or comes on for a brief while and then kicks back off do not keep pushing the button.  Check the circuit breaker and then check the fuses .  You will usually find out that its a shorted fuse and if so its an easy fix.  Again if it does not turn on after the second time do not keep pushing the button.  Its just going to put more heating oil in the combustion chamber and when you do finally turn it on it could overload it.

The oil burner seems to be on and running but there is no fire?

I would start with the transformer on this.  It could be that oil is being sprayed out the nozzle but not being lit.  CAUTION:  Discount the oil burner before proceeding further with diagnostics to the oil burner transformer.  If its powered you can get shocked really bad or electrified.  Disconnect the wires to the burner and the furnace.  Leave the transformer wire in place.  Take a screwdriver with a rubber handle (again the transformer could be charged with several thousand volts so take extreme caution and hold the rubber end) and touch it to one of the terminals of the transformers of the transformer.  At the same time you want to angle the screwdriver so the it comes into contact with the other terminal.  The current will form a nice 2″ arc and if the its smaller or yellowish it needs to be replaced.

It could also be the oil burner nozzle if the furnace is running but there is no fire.  The tip of the nozzle is extremely small.  Its made to spray a very fine mist of fuel out to be ignited and can clog up really quickly with moisture or dirt.  To check for moisture or dirt disconnect the oil supply line from the burner and catch the fuel in some sort of glass. Look for the presence of water or excess particles.  If you see some your nozzle is most likely plugged up.  This is again one of the main reasons you want to filter you heating oil as much as possible.  The same thing applies to if you are fueling your oil burner with waste oil.  This part is really not that expensive and if your nozzle is clogged you should be able to get a new one either online or at a heating parts store.
