I get many questions throughout the month from people asking me two questions.  They are a) what do waste oil boilers/ burners or furnaces cost and b) are they worth that cost?

I think these are very good questions to ask.  Many people today are interested in various forms of alternative energy heating but they also want them to be economically feasible and give some sort of reasonable return.

I can assure you that this form of heating will do both.

How Much Do They Cost?

This is will depend on what type of structure you want to use your boiler (or burner) for.  Are you are going to be heating a home, office building, or small shop?  You are going to find that many companies that make waste oil boilers will have at at least three models for heating small, medium, and large areas.  The larger the area you have the larger your hot water output (for boilers) or air flow (for furnaces) will have to be.

The prices can range from $5,000 all the way to $10,000 for your waste oil boiler, fuel tank, and several optional accessories.  That does not include the installation and set-up.  That alone could cost you an additional $2,000.  Here is the breakdown of my total costs for my personal waste oil boiler.  My basic package was $5,698 but once I added a hot water coil, a 250 gallon workbench holding tank with a furnace stand, a plumbing and hardware package, and tank gauge the total cost came out to be $8,000.  I then had to pay an additional $2,000 for shipping.  Keep in mind that I live in Anchorage so my shipping will be a lot more than everyone else.  So the total cost I paid for my Energy Logic El-200 model ended up being $10,000.  Following that expenditure I still had to pay another $2,000 for the installation of my machine including connecting all the thermostats, pipes, hydronic lines and tubing to my house and my newly build 1,700 two story garage/shop adjacent to it.

There are some lessor models like Lanair that you can get for $4,000-$5000.  Keep in mind that that is just for the base package and you will need to add at least $1,500 to whatever base package you see to make it workable.  I would strongly recommend going with some of the top brands.  These devices are extremely delicate and if you get one of the cheaper models you can be sure to have problems.  I personally am a big fan of Columbia and Energy Logic but there are others that are just as good.  Beckett makes a lot of the components for these companies as well as some add ons you can get like the Beckett heat manager (also known as a fuel economizer).

Is the Cost for an Oil Burner/ Boiler Worth It?

Absolutely!  I have save thousands of dollars in heating cost by having one.  I would not trade mine for the world.  My oil boiler has enabled me to have $10 heating bills in February.  If I had not purchased one that bill with my home and shop would have been at least $400 a month during the wintertime especially when you consider the fact that we had to coldest winter in the last ten years.  I saved at least $1800 just this last winter and because all my heat was free and I had an abundance of waste oil I had the temperature in my home and business at 80 degrees all the time.

I would say that I have gotten all my money back and for many of the people who live in this country the ROI will be fast because your costs of shipping an installation will be lower.  Depending on where you live you should be able to recoup all your money in two to three years.  Your return could be greater if natural gas and heating costs continue to rise at their current levels.

Oil Boiler Maintenance Reminders

I want to take this time to remind everyone who owns a waste oil boiler several things.  If you already know the following things consider this a refresher course.

Waste oil burners/ boilers cost way too much money not to maintain them to the best of your ability.  If you want to get the maximum savings from them while reducing the chances of having them break down or clog up than it would be wise to take notes.

What Type of Fuel Can I Burn?

Any oil with a flash point of 400 degrees or less and up to 90 weight. Used motor oils, brake fluid, gear lubricants, automatic transmission fluid, industrial oils and  diesel fuel are acceptable. Do not add gasoline, paint thinner, chlorinated solvents or antifreeze to your tank.

The majority of the people who owner waste oil boilers/ burners are going to burn used motor oil.  Its the most readily available substance out of all the possible substances that you can burn.  Having said that you can use any other oil with a flash point of 400 degrees or less and up to 90 weight.  Besides used motor oil this can include brake fluid, power steering fluid, gear lubricants (including 75W-90 and 80W-90), various industrial oils, any automatic transmission fluids  (Mecron or Dextron),  and of course diesel fuel.

You can use vegetable oil in your machine as well.  If you know someone who owns a restaurant than he/ she more than likely has tons of this stuff.  Please take note of two things if you decide to use vegetable oil!  You want to make sure the temperature stays above 50 degrees or it will quickly clog up the filters and it must be mixed 50/50 with either used motor oil, transmission fluid, or diesel.  If you have a 55 gallon drum of waste oil and a 55 gallon drum of used vegetable oil than you can combine them to make 110 gallons of usable fuel for your oil burner.

Its been a common misconception that you cannot burn any synthetic oil.  That’s not true.  Like vegetable oil you just need to make sure that its combined with the other type of 100% acceptable oil.  The main reason for this, which holds true for vegetable oil as well, is that those oils alone do not burn well when they get ignited.

You do not burn gasoline,  paint thinners, or any solvents with chlorine in your boiler.  You will mess it up.  You also want to make certain that little to no antifreeze or water gets into your oil burner as well.

Why is It So Important to Filter the Oil?

Your oil boiler/ burner works by spraying a fine mist of used oil combined with air through a very small nozzle which is then ignited (by an “ignitor” on top of the nozzle).  This creates a mass amount of heat which if its an oil furnace the heat just heats up tubes in which air gets blown across it to make it hot.  If its a boiler than it the heat flows through tubes in the boiler chamber which heats up water that’s flowing across it.

Whats my point?

My point is that if your fuel going into your oil boiler is not clean it will quickly clog up the nozzle.  The nozzle is smaller than you think and can get clogged up fairly easily.  You want a fine mist being sprayed from the nozzle and anything more or less will produce less than efficient results.  And this is the reason why most people have problems with this machine after only a short period of time.  They forget to filter whatever oil they are putting into their oil burner/ boiler/furnace.

How Do I Filter the Oil?

Most people filter the oil going before it goes into their waste oil holding tank with a stainless steel 30-60 micron filter.  Most companies say 140 micron is fine but I like to go above and beyond the minimum with my boiler. A 30 micron filter will plug up faster than a 140 micron filter but those filters are cheap compared with a new boiler or down time costs.

If you want to be an overachiever and go way beyond the recommended standards to provide the very best filtering and make it easy on yourself in the long run you need an oil centrifuge.  This is the very best item you can get to complement your oil burner besides a Becket fuel economizer.  This machine literally spins all the moisture and dirt out of your used motor oil making it close to fresh motor oil as you can get without re-refining it.

How much Fuel do Oil Boilers use?

A lot of the companies that sell these units will give you set figures.  I have found that all the figures are generalizations and not reliable.  Your usage will have a lot of variables including how much room it has to heat.  The time of the month will also have an effect on your oil usage.  In the summertime I barely burn 4 gallons a day.  In January I burn a little over 20 gallons per day.  Its best to have a spreadsheet and track it to find out your individual oil usage so you can plan accordingly.

I got my waste oil boiler back in 2007.  Its an Energy Logic Black Gold boiler.  Why did I go with this particular model.  In my research this brand had the highest track record and the local distributor in my area was really friendly and knowledgeable.

I purchased the EL-200 B Waste Oil Boiler Model 200.  I bought the optional 250 gallon workbench storage tank with it.

I really liked this particular waste oil boiler.  Here are some keys facts with my particular model:

  • Fuel Flow Rate                            1.4 Gallons
  • BTU Input                                    200,000 BTU/ 58.3 kW per hour
  • Water Output Temp                    230 F
  • Domestic Hot Water Output        4.0 Gallons Per Minute
  • Weight                                        1237 lbs

The following people who have the following should think about buying a waste oil burner if they wish to save money over the course of five years and live in a place with at least three months of winter.  In floor radiant heating, paint booths, evaporation, potable hot water, truck stops, car and truck washes, make-up air, hot water, dishwashers, supplement to HVAC systems.

Energy Logics waste oil boiler also comes with a three year warranty on all parts and a ten year warranty on the heat exchanger.

If you have a huge warehouse you have to heat you might want to think about the Model 500.  It produces 8.0 gallons of hot water per minute in instead of the 4.0 gallons per minutes that my model 200 produces.

I live in Alaska and got my particular oil burner shipped from Kent, Washington.

Would really sold me on my particular boiler were a couple things.  Its known to be the most low maintenance out of all the boilers out there.  Waste oil heaters break down easier that people realize and I knew several people who had gotten them and they had problems with them from day one.  My model is known to be the most “problem free” out the all the choices.

My boiler also weighs significantly less than most cast iron boilers by a long shot yet puts out three times more heat per pound than them.  A cast iron boiler can easily weight 2100 lbs while mine weighs half of that.  That made is cheaper to be shipped and easier to install.

And finally I found that my particular waste oil boiler is the easiest to clean.  I can swing out a door and it gives me access to the combustion chamber, nozzle, tubes, and flame retention head.  To keep your oil burner running a top speed you have to clean it regularly and stay on top of it.

My 200 model cost me $5,698 for the base package.  Several things were added to that number to make it a lot more (it always is in life, isn’t it).  It cost $7,898 once you add the domestic hot water coil.  Then you add another $1198 for the 250 gallon workbench tank with furnace stand.  Then add another $94 for the plumbing and hardware package and tank gauge.  Everything was supposed to come to $6990  but there were several other things that made it closer to $8,000.  Then you have to add a little over $2,000 for shipping.  Then I had to pay this guy approximately $2,000 once it was all said and done to actually install my waste oil boiler in my shed and connect the tubing to my house and massive 1, 700 square foot new garage I built for my oil change business.  So all together I spent a good $12,000 on the whole thing.  And I also bought some add-ons after that make the system more efficient.

I said all the numbers to emphasis that this is going to be a long term return on your investment.  Your waste oil boiler is not going to pay for itself  for at least three years depending on where you live.  But once it does, think about it, you heat is virtually free.  You will not be a slave to the natural gas company any longer.  Think of how good that feels.  Its freedom.

This has been an abnormally cold winter where I live.  It was in the under zero Fahrenheit range for three weeks between late December and January 2009.  The warmest day during that period was 1 degrees for maybe an hour.  I was burning 23 gallons per day.  I got my bill and it said “$8.00″  Everyone else was getting a bill for at least $350 and that was for an average sized house.  I have a well sized house and a massive garage.  My bill would have been at least $500 that month.  But it was only sixteen dollars.  Do you know how liberating that felt?!  The meter reader reset my meter several times and keep coming back because he couldn’t understand what was going on.  Its turned from confusion into anger.  Finally he got his manager to come and check it.  He could not figure it out.  Why didn’t he just ask me what was going on??  He came back for a third time two weeks ago and was pissed off.  He thought I was tampering with the meter.  I told him I was not.  He did not believe me.  He told me that he had reset the meter several times and that he was going to get to the bottom of this.  I told him that I had a waste oil boiler.  He did not understand at first.  I guess he had meet many people with that especially in a residential neighborhood.  Who could afford it??  Anyway I had to explain and show him my set up and he calmed down.  It felt good to see his face.  I felt so free. I was out of Matrix.  At least one of my bills were.  It was satisfying to see his face so confused.  “We don’t own you anymore”?  That’s what I registered.  No, they do not.  The natural gas company here gets $8 per month from me for having the service available just in case.  Nothing more nothing less.  HA.

I definitely recommend an oil burner to whoever can procure the right supply of oil.  Its a truly worthwhile investment.  If you have the patience and the time to keep up with the maintenance and do not spending a large sum knowing you are going to get it back plus much more in the future you need to buy a waste oil boiler.  You will not regret it.

If you have any questions about my boiler or want to make any comments please feel free to.  I try to check this site once per day.  I will provide whatever help I can. I have also written several post about increasing  fuel efficiency for your machine as well as specific prices you will have to pay to get them.
